Landscape Pests
This is a list of common pests that feed on trees, shrubs, perennials and vines found in the outside landscape.
Japanese Beetle -
Native to Japan, these beetles were first seen in New Jersey in 1916 and since then have become a big pest. They feed on hundreds of different plant species. The adult beetles are present from June -October. They feed only in the daytime and are most active on warm, sunny days. The females live for 30-45 days. Just before they die, they lay their eggs immediately under the surface of lawns. Grayish white grubs soon hatch and feed on turf roots. As weather turns cold in the late fall, grubs move 8-10 inches down into the soil, where they remain dormant for the winter. When the soil warms up in spring, the grubs move back up near the soil surface and resume feeding on roots. They pupate and re-emerge as adults in late May or June. Jap. Beetle traps are a good solution for control. The traps emit a hormone that attracts the male.
