Also known as Swiss Mountain Pine.

Size: 15- 20'  in height ---  20-25' in width but can be pruned to remain 5-7'. In the spring when the new growth  (the candle) elongates Prune no more than 50-60% off. It is important to wait till the candle completely extends and  prune before the new needles begin to spread away from the candle.

Habit: Usually broad-spreading and bushy.

Leaves: Needles are in pairs, rigid, 1-2" long.

Culture: Deep, moist, organic soil in full sun to light shade.

Utilization: Hedge or screen. Smaller cultivars are good in rock gardens and foundation planting.

Propagation: Seeds are best and need no stratification and can be sown immediately. More info on propagation.

Disease and Insects: Rust, borers, sawflies and scale can be very serious problems. Sawfly larvae can defoliate a small plant in 48 hours and should be taken seriously. Treat with powdered sevin or visit JerryBaker.com on soft bodied bug killer. Scale is also serious but they take awhile to kill the plant.

Climate Range: Zone 2-7, in certain microclimates it can handle Zone 8. See the map.

Cultivars:

  • 'Compacta'  4-5 feet tall after 40 years.
  • 'Mops' Dwarf globose form as tall as wide. Matures at 3' tall
