Size: 50-60' tall
and 45-50' wide (Can reach 100-120 feet in the wild.) Habit:
Deciduous; symmetrical,
spreading and pyramidal
Leaves: 2-4" long by 5" wide. Opposite,
3-5 lobed, triangular ovate lobesand sinuses are irregularly toothed. Medium green on the
top and grayish green on the underneath. New growth usually red. petiole 2-4" long.
Culture: Easily transplantable.
Prefers slightly acid soil but is tolerant of many types. Tolerant of moist soils so ideal
for flood plains and stream edges.
Utilization: Shade tree, Street tree, Specimen tree
Propagation: Cuttings from firm wood with 2-3 nodes
planted in moist perlite. Seeds will germinate after a 2-3 day soaking in cold (37f)

Cultivars: There are at least 30 cultivars ranging
in fall color, growth habit and size. Here are five popular cultivars:
- 'Armstrong' - 50-70' tall and only 15' wide.
Silver-gray bark. Drooping leaves from long petioles. Needs lots of moisture for good fall
color.
- 'Autumn Blaze' - Deep green leaves. Excellent
orange-red fall color slightly more drought tolerant.
- 'Autumn Flame' - Rounded habit, maturing to
60'. early red fall color.
- 'October Glory' - Oval-rounded (40-50')
Has a late fall color (orange to red).
- 'Red Sunset' - Probably the most popular Red
Maple. Pyramidal maturing to rounded. Very cold hardy. Gright red fall color.
